Emergencies

When something feels off.

Most orthodontic issues are more inconvenience than emergency. Here's how to handle the common ones — and when to call us.

Poking Wire

Use the eraser end of a pencil to gently push the wire flat, or cover the sharp end with a small ball of orthodontic wax. Call us to schedule a quick trim.

Loose Bracket or Band

If the bracket is still attached to the wire, leave it in place and cover it with wax if it's uncomfortable. Call the office to schedule a repair — no need to rush in the same day unless it's causing pain.

Loose Wire

Try to slide the wire back into place with tweezers. If you can't, cover the sharp end with wax. Call us for an adjustment.

Lost or Broken Retainer

Call us as soon as possible. Teeth can start shifting within a few days without a retainer — the sooner we can get you a replacement, the better.

General Soreness

Rinse with warm salt water, take an over-the-counter pain reliever if needed, and stick to soft foods for a day or two. It usually resolves within 3–5 days.
