Frequently Asked Questions
What is an orthodontist?+
An orthodontist is a dentist with 2–3 additional years of specialty training focused on the alignment of teeth and jaws. All orthodontists are dentists, but only about 6% of dentists are orthodontists.
At what age should my child see an orthodontist?+
The American Association of Orthodontists recommends a first evaluation by age 7. Most kids won't need braces yet, but early screening helps us spot bite problems while a child is still growing.
How long does treatment take?+
Most treatments run 12–24 months depending on complexity. We'll give you a specific range at your consult.
Do braces hurt?+
You'll feel some soreness for a few days after your braces are placed and after each adjustment. It's usually mild and easily managed with over-the-counter pain relievers.
Can I still play sports or a musical instrument?+
Absolutely. A mouthguard is recommended for contact sports. For most instruments, you'll adjust within a few days.
How often will I have appointments?+
Typically every 6–10 weeks for braces, and every 8–12 weeks for clear aligners.
Do you accept insurance?+
Yes — we're in-network with most major PPO plans and file claims for you.
Can adults get braces?+
Yes! Roughly a third of our patients are adults. Clear aligners and clear ceramic braces are popular options for grown-ups.
What happens if I break a bracket or wire?+
Call us right away. Small issues can often be managed at home with wax, but we'll get you in quickly to make any needed repairs.
Do I still need to see my regular dentist?+
Yes — please continue your regular dental cleanings every 6 months (or as recommended by your dentist) throughout your orthodontic treatment.
Why choose an orthodontist over aligners that come in the mail?+
Orthodontists are dental specialists who diagnose, prevent and treat dental and facial irregularities, receiving an additional two to three years of specialized education beyond dental school. Dr. JK Dillehay and Dr. Ken Dillehay are active members of the AAO.
When should children get an orthodontic check-up?+
Dr. JK Dillehay or Dr. Ken Dillehay and the AAO recommend an orthodontic screening at age seven. Most orthodontic patients at Dillehay Orthodontics begin treatment between ages 9 and 14.
Can adults benefit from orthodontic treatment?+
Orthodontic treatment can be successful at almost any age. About one in every four orthodontic patients at Dillehay Orthodontics is over age 18.
